Avoidance
The worst way to say, "No" is to decline to answer. Total silence. While you may intend to spare feelings the questioner may be filling the silence with interpretations. You don't even want to know where that silence causes a mind to go.Thoughts such as, "they hate me and don't even care enough to give an answer." may come to a questioner's mind.
